Douglas Animal Welfare Group has received a check for $649 from Shane Martin, store director for Smith's Food and Drug Center in Gardnerville.
The funds were part of the store's "Pet Points" program, and represent rebates from customers who purchased pet food at the local store, Martin explained. Store assistant director Ella Wilson assisted Martin in presenting the check to DAWG member and representative Lori O'Neil Shelton.

Shelton said the funds will help the Douglas County non-profit in its efforts to find new homes for lost and abandoned dogs and cats, many of which are housed at the Douglas County Animal Shelter.
The volunteer organization's next major event is DAWG Day Animal Awareness at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, Sept. 8. Day-long activities will include entertainment, a silent auction, an on-site low cost microchip clinic, law-cost vaccination clinic, pet photography and other activities. Local celebrities will be "jailed" in a large on-stage dog-house, where they'll stay until each raises "bail," in the form of donations to DAWG.
