The Public Utilities Commission is set for a public hearing Aug. 22 in Carson City regarding Southwest Gas Co.'s application to lower Northern Nevada natural gas rates by 6 percent.

The session is 6 p.m. Aug. 22 in hearing room A, Public Utilities Commission Offices, 1150 E. William St., Carson City.

If the rate changes are approved by the commission, the average bill for a Northern Nevada customer who uses 29 therms of gas in the summer will drop $2.52 per month. The average bill of a customer who used 99 therms of gas in the winter would drop $8.61 a month.

Southwest has asked the application be acted upon as soon as possible to implement the reduction before winter.

Representatives of the commission and the gas company will be at the consumer session to answer questions. For information, contact the commission at 684-6100, or http://pucweb1/state.nv.us/pucn/, the commission's Web site.
