Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park is temporarily closing a portion of the Marlette-Hobart backcountry Monday through Friday, starting Aug. 20 through Oct. 15.

The affected park areas will be Lakeview Road, Hobart Road between Marlette Lake and Hobart Lake, Red House Flume Trail and the Tunnel Creek Road in the Red House / Franktown Creek area.

The affected access points are the park gates above the Lakeview Estates and at the top of Musgrove Canyon, both in Washoe Valley.

"The closure is due to the Marlette Lake Water System Project and related visitor safety concerns," said Jay Howard, park supervisor for Lake Tahoe-Nevada State Park. "A significant amount of travel on narrow dirt roads by heavy equipment is associated with this work."

The project will upgrade the existing diesel pump system with the installation of a natural gas generator, electric pump and new delivery piping. This system supplies water to the Virginia City, Silver City and Carson City areas.

Ash Canyon Road, Hobart Lake, North Canyon Road, the Marlette Lake Flume Trail and the Tahoe Rim Trail, within the park boundaries, will continue to be open weekly.

The closure does not affect backcountry travel permit holders, but permittees should proceed with caution, Howard said. "We apologize for any inconvenience this closure may cause. Please contact the park at (775) 831-0494 with any questions."
