William A. Davies Jr.

1941-2007

A funeral service is 10 a.m. Thursday at Faith Lutheran Church, 2075 W. Seventh St., Reno, for William A. Davies Jr., who died Aug. 18, 2007.

Mr. Davies was born Oct. 30, 1941, in Tacoma, Wash. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Reno, Adopt-A-Platoon, the Disabled American Veterans, and Telephone Pioneers. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Vulcan in communications.

He worked with AT&T until his retirement. He served several volunteer positions and in the U.S. Naval Reserve for four years.

His first volunteer job was as a counselor for a crisis call center for four years. He spent four years as a reserve officer with Albany Police Department, 14 years with Berkeley Police Department, receiving many commendations and citations for commitment and bravery. After retiring from AT&T, Mr. Davies was employed in the casino industry for six years before retiring from all employment.

Mr. Davies is survived by his wife, Janice Davies; three daughters, Jody Rich of Lyme, N.H., Marcie Rivera of Fresno, Calif. and Renea (Gary) Louie of Minden; seven grandchildren including Shelby and Whitney Louie of Minden; eight great-grandchildren and numerous cousins.

Grace Schmidt Kober

1913-2007

Grace Schmidt Kober died Aug. 15, 2007, at the home of her daughter in Gardnerville. She was 93.

Mrs. Kober was born Nov. 1, 1913, in Ledgerwood, N.D. She was raised in Oakland, Calif., where she met Dr. Carl W. Schmidt Jr. They were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Gardnerville.

The Schmidts resided in Berkeley, Calif., where they raised three daughters, Karen, Gael and Star.

They moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1956 where Dr. Schmidt practiced dentistry until he retired and they moved to Gardnerville.

Mrs. Kober worked at the Purple Bottle and sold Avon.

She was active in the Assembly of God Church and lead Bible studies.

She moved to Santa Barbara and married Albert Kober when he was 88 and she was 76. They had 13 years of marriage until Albert died at age 101.

Mrs. Kober returned to Gardnerville to live with her daughter Karen and her husband Jim Griswold.

In addition to Karen, Mrs. Kober is survived by her daughter Star Savage of Mission Viejo, Calif., grandchildren Dan Robinson of Gardnerville, Dianna Gurnett of Arvin, Calilf., Tony Pearse of Gardnerville, Cheri Lynn Thornton of Elko, Shawn Savage of Grass Valley, Calif., and Corene Lemp of Foothill Ranch, Calif., and nine great-grandchildren.
