The fun folks from the Minden Douglas Elks Lodge in the Ranchos would like you to know about some special events they're hosting in the month of September.

First is their annual rummage sale, set for the weekend of Sept. 8 and 9. The sale is scheduled from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday and 7 a.m. until noon on Sunday. It's a perfect opportunity to discover hidden treasures at bargain prices.

Although they have already amassed a good amount of merchandise, there is a need for additional donations such as furniture, electronics and other household items.

You can arrange to drop off your donations at the lodge, located at 1276 Pit Road in the Ranchos, by calling either Dave or Jackie Trueblood at 782-3416 anytime before that weekend.

Then on Saturday, Sept. 22, the Elks invite you to come and enjoy their Fashion Show and Follies. Cocktail hour begins at 5:30 p.m. followed by a wide variety of hors d'oeuvres before the show gets underway.

The evening's entertainment will be comprised of several humorous skits performed by relatives of Elks members. Interspersed between the acts, the audience will be treated to a fashion show featuring clothing from two local shops, Especially for You and Watermelon Patch.

Tickets cost $20 per person and may be purchased by calling the Truebloods at the number above or Glennis Hill at 265-1030.

The next morning, Sunday, Sept. 23, the Elks will be up bright and early for a pancake breakfast. This monthly treat features pancakes, omelets and scrambled eggs, sausage, juice, coffee and lively conversation, all for $5 for adults, $3 for children 12 and younger.

Reservations are not needed. Simply show up to the lodge on Pit Road and be ready for a delicious feast. And no dishes to clean up afterward.

If you can't make the pancake breakfast this month, the next one is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 28. Each breakfast event runs from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

School back

You may have noticed increased foot, bike and car traffic around our local schools this week. Elementary schools were back in session as of Wednesday and the secondary schools will resume classes on Monday, Aug. 27.

Please use extra caution when driving around these areas, and remember that the speed limit during school hours is 15 mph and 25 mph for Douglas High.
