Caltrans highway meeting today
From 4 to 7 p.m. at the Walker Community Center, Caltrans will present their proposal for eliminating some of the tight turns and dips in Highway 395 between Highway 89 and the Nevada state line. During the project construction, there will be a big effect on Antelope Valley's residents for their travel to jobs, appointments and shopping. Please attend and become informed, ask your questions and give your input.
Walker supervisor board meets
Last Tuesday the board held an evening session in Walker. It is unfortunate that the community as a whole wasn't aware of the meeting, as several people said they would have attended. Those of us on the board's e-mail list only got our notice four days before the meeting, but it was still well-attended by those with issues on the agenda. There was an interesting presentation about West Nile virus by Dr. Rick Johnson, County Public Health Officer, then further information from Evan Nikirk of Public Works about the county's grading permit procedure and requirements. The last item was a presentation and request from John Peters on behalf of the Coleville Boosters for improvement of the baseball field at the community center. The request wasn't approved at that time, and it seems that this may be something that will take some time to be approved and funded.
If you have any questions or concerns about the county's activity in our area, Supervisor Bill Reid would like to hear from you at either (760) 932-5532 or (760) 932-7456.
Red Cross shelter training
At 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 at the Walker Senior Center, Mono County and the Northern Nevada Red Cross will be holding a training session about how a shelter works. They need to have trained volunteers to assist in the shelters when the next evacuation for a disaster happens. Unfortunately, we know it will happen again sometime, so we should be prepared for the worst. If you're interested in being a volunteer, please attend.
Regional Planning Advisory Committee
The regular monthly meeting will be 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 6 at the Walker Community Center. There will be items of interest to the community that will be discussed, so try to come and hear about them.
This and that
-- You still have until Sept. 4 to place your sealed bid on either of the vehicles the fire department is selling. Contact the Antelope Valley Fire Department at (530) 495-2900 for further information.
-- Coleville High School's football and volleyball teams started their season with wins last Saturday. It's a lot of fun to attend either or both of their games, so try to get out and support them. The next home football game will be this Saturday at 1 p.m. vs. Smith Valley.
-- Local artist Margo Petterson just keeps on having her work appreciated by the experts. She has two paintings accepted for Art at the Classic, which is held with the Draft Horse Classic in Grass Valley Sept. 20-23. She was also accepted to have a booth where she can display and sell more of her gorgeous paintings. Congratulations yet again, Margo.
Have a wonderful and safe Labor Day weekend.
