Marine Corps Pvt. Jacob P. Fletcher, son of Marie L. and Michael S. Fletcher of Wellington, recently completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego.
Fletcher and fellow recruits began their training at 5 a.m., by running three miles and performing calisthenics. In addition to the physical conditioning program, Fletcher spent numerous hours in classroom and field assignments which included learning first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and assorted weapons training. They performed close order drill and operated as a small infantry unit during field training.
Gardnerville's Noone wins scholarship
Krista Noone of Gardnerville received a $2,000 scholarship from the Alliance for Affordable Services.
This year, the Alliance awarded a grand total of $203,000 in scholarships to 135 students from across the nation.
The Alliance Scholarship Program was created to relieve the burden faced by Alliance Members sending their children to college.
Goodwin graduates from Air Force basic
Air Force Airman James T. Goodwin has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
During the six weeks of intensive training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received training in anti-terrorism, self-defense, basic field security and participated in Warrior Week.
Goodwin is now receiving technical training to become a member of the Air Force Security Forces.
He is the son of David and Marlene Goodwin of Minden, and a 2007 graduate of Douglas High School.
