The Douglas County Bar is collecting new shoes for the children temporarily sheltered at Austin's House, starting Sept. 6 at the bar association's monthly noon luncheon at Carson Valley Inn.
Lunch attendees are asked to bring a pair of new play shoes or winter boots sizes 1 to 13 for the kids at Austin's House. In lieu of shoes, a $25 donation can also be made, payable to DCBA, which earmarks those donations for the purchase of children's shoes.
"A bar association must be engaged with its community," said Douglas County Bar President Mo Hernandez.
Austin's House is also known as the Carson Valley Children's Center.
It is a safe haven for children in need due to neglect or abuse.
The facility provides a nurturing living and learning environment and promotes the health and wellbeing of children and their families through assessment and appropriate intervention.
Austin's House is a partnership of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Douglas County Social Services, Douglas County Juvenile Probations Office and the Douglas County Court Appointed Special Advocate Program.
Shoe donations can also be made at the Douglas Bar's "after hours mixer," scheduled 5:30 p.m. Sept. 13, at the Carson Valley Country Club Restaurant in Gardnerville.
During the month of September, shoe donations will also be received at Sierra Center, 1662 Highway 395, Minden, where a collection box has been set up in the lobby.
Checks can also be dropped off at the offices of Matthew D. Ence in Suite 107 in Sierra Center or at the Law offices of Mauricio Hernandez in Suite 203 in the Sierra Center.
For information, call Ence at 783-8501 or Hernandez at 782-0195.
