The school year has begun and the Partnership of Community Resources has been gearing up all summer to make this the strongest prevention education year ever.

There is so much about our youth in print and the results from the mistakes they make as they take their journey through the teen years.

Some of those mistakes can be devastating and some can be deadly. The partnership, which has been providing a community outreach through federal and state grants since 1992, has come a long way and hopes to continue to increase participation in the youth education opportunities in the 2007-08 school year.

As part of our effort to educate, inform, and build youth knowledge we have established clubs at Pau-Wa-Lu and Carson Valley middle schools and Douglas High School. The partnership will be stretching out to the Lake schools this school year as well. These clubs meet on a weekly basis and offer the youth of Douglas County the opportunity to learn about tobacco, alcohol, drugs, teen pregnancy and suicide prevention. These teens then reach out to their peers and the students in the elementary schools with peer to peer education assemblies. For the date and time of club meetings students can call 782-8611.

During the seventh and 10th grade orientations the partnership set up a table at the middle and high schools to share the events and activities the Students Taking on Prevention Club accomplished in the 2006-07 school year.

The display table allowed students and their parents the opportunity to see the youth of our community and the positive effect their efforts have on prevention education.

The first training for seventh -12th grade students will be at the Partnership of Community Resources 1528 Highway 395, N Gardnerville 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Sept. 22.

The training, sponsored by the American Lung Association and the partnership, is free to the students and includes lunch and games.
