The Douglas High School girls' basketball team picked up three wins at the season-opening Lowry Invitational over the weekend, but showed coach Werner Christen they still have plenty to work on.
The Tigers opened the season Thursday with a 47-25 win over defending 2A state champion Battle Mountain and followed up Friday with a 42-28 win over defending 3A state champ Spring Creek.
Douglas closed out the weekend with a 56-31 win over Lowry in the Buckaroos' home gym.
"It was OK for the first weekend," Douglas coach Werner Christen said. "We have a long ways to go. We found some things we need to work on. Some things were OK, but we found a lot of things to work on."
Christen said he was happy with how the team came together and that he was pleased with the potential for development the Tigers showed.
"Spring Creek, that's a team that has always given us problems," Christen said. "We played well against them and Lowry is really, really good in their home gym, so that was a big win for us.
"The kids had fun overall. They enjoy each other a lot and they put forth a true team effort in each of the games.
"Everyone did some good things and everyone got some good minutes. We made some mistakes, but the good thing was those were more physical than mental."
Douglas takes its 3-0 record into the High Sierra Winter Classic where the Tigers will take on Lassen, Calif., Thursday at 3 p.m. at Spanish Springs High School.
A win there could set up a potential matchup against Sierra League upstart Hug High on Friday.
