Soroptimist International of Carson Valley is selling cookbooks in time for the holiday season. "Great Recipes from Soroptimist International Carson Valley" is available for $15 at Artisans International Gallery, Café Bella Vita, Carson Valley Inn Gift Shop, Sweetie Pies and Tumblewind Antiques through Christmas. Proceeds benefit the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center.
A sample recipe from Soroptimist club member Liz Bricker:
Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce
4 cups evaporated milk
8 ounces stale bread, crumbled
2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup crushed pineapple
1 cup raisins
1 stick of butter
1 cup chopped pecans
1 teaspoon nutmeg
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 teaspoons cinnamon
4 eggs
Melt butter. Combine all ingredients in the large bowl. Mixture should be a little soupy. Make sure eggs are mixed well. Butter a 9x13-inch or larger baking dish, preferably glass but metal works.
Cook at 375 degrees for 75-90 minutes.
Serve warm with whiskey sauce.
Whiskey Sauce
2 egg yolks
1/4 cup bourbon
1/2 cup butter
1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar
1/4 cup Grand Marnier
1/4 teaspoon allspice
Cream butter and powdered sugar over medium low heat until dissolved. Turn off heat and stir in egg yolks. Add allspice, bourbon and Grand Marnier to the mixture.
Serve over bread pudding.
