The student council at Piñon Hills Elementary School donated six bags of blankets to Austin's House, the local shelter for children in crisis, on Dec. 5.

"It's so awesome. These guys are totally into charity," said Unkyung Park Johnson, sixth-grade teacher and advisor to the 18 fourth- through sixth-graders on the student council. "We donated three $50 dinners for Thanksgiving, and decided we wanted to do something with Austin's House during Christmas."

She estimated her students donated about 30 blankets to the shelter.

"It took two weeks to collect all the blankets," she said. "Austin's House told us they needed blankets because kids were taking their blankets with them when they leave."

The teacher said she was impressed with how generous both her students and the community were during the drive.
