The Carson Valley Middle School boys' eighth-grade boys' basketball team used a tough half-court defense to frustrate county rival Pau-Wa-Lu Tuesday afternoon, taking a 35-10 ictory at home over the Panthers.
Matt Wylie led the way for the Tigers, scoring 11 points, while Nick Maestretti added six, James TenBroeck added five and Connor Hughes came up with a number of steals at the half court line to propel Carson Valley to the win.
For Pau-Wa-Lu, Ryan Simons and Eric Kleiner each scored three points while Hunter Fillmore added two.
Hughes scored a pair of breakaway layups in the first quarter to help Carson Valley get out on an early 12-0 run before the Panthers scored the final four points of the quarter to close the gap to 12-4.
After Fillmore scored to open the second quarter, Carson Valley took off on another big run, this time 10-0, and extended that into a 23-0 run through the third to put the game away.
Pau-Wa-Lu had a couple of near misses as J.P. Garner put up two nice-looking shots from 3-point range only to have them bounced in and out of the rim.
Simons scored Pau-Wa-Lu's last basket in the fourth quarter.
Carson Valley got four points apiece from Hughes and Jake Tessman, three from Adrian Duenas and two from Ben Khongkhtitham.
In the seventh-grade game, Carson Valley pushed ahead to a 43-12 win after outscoring the Panthers 25-1 in the first half.
Hunter Myers and Michael Nolting each scored eight points for the Tigers while Cody Carter and Christian Arzadon each had six.
Jakes Passes scored five, Chase White and Nolan Weintz each scored four and Jack Crawford added two to round out the Tigers' scoring.
Pau-Wa-Lu got five points apiece from Joe Syammach and Jaden Mustacchio and Jake Downum added two for the Panthers.
