The Douglas boys' basketball team took advantage of its superior 3-point shooting Wednesday night and rode a second-half surge to take a 74-50 win over Lowry at the George Maldonado Classic at Galena High School.
Douglas outshot the Buckaroos 7-2 from behind the arc and outscored Lowry 38-23 in the second half, setting themselves up for Thursday's match with the Sky View Bobcats, of Smithfield, Utah, beginning at 6 p.m.
Three Tigers scored in double figures, including 6-foot-7 Jeff Nady (14 points), 6-foot-3 Kevin Emm (14) and 6-foot-3 James McLaughlin (13).
Douglas also got six points from Ryan McPeek and five apiece from Parker Robertson and Tyler Hoelzen. Emm had four 3-pointers, while McLaughlin added two.
Jacob Ragsdale, a 6-foot-5 senior center, was the only Buckaroo in double figures, leading Lowry with 17 points.
Douglas led 36-27 going into the third quarter, when it outscored the Buckaroos 20-11 to effectively put the game out of reach.
Lowry will meet the Mira Loma (Sacramento) Matadors in the first match of the eight-team tournament, beginning at 3 p.m. Mountain View will then take on Eldorado, followed by Douglas-Sky View and Galena-Sparks.
