As every year, the Topaz Lake Fishing Derby is taking place, starting yesterday and continuing until April 13. If you catch a tagged fish, you can collect an instant cash prize, ranging from $50 to $1000, in addition to other prizes. This is something a lot of people look forward to every year, including my husband and his best friend. They are ready to roll Get out there, give it a try, and see if you can win one of the good prizes.
Our Lady of the Valley Chapel
Since there is no Catholic church in the Antelope Valley, many local residents have made the construction of a church their project. Their goal is to break ground within four months to construct and enclose the new building. They have already raised over $92,000, which has helped with much of the preliminary construction costs, but they will of course need more for the complete project. If you have any questions, please call (530) 495-9589 or (800) 495-1066. Any donations may also be mailed to Our Lady of the Valley Chapel, P.O. Box 200, Coleville, CA 96107. I hope our readers will help support this worthy and welcome addition to our valley.
Basketball is back
After their holiday break, the Coleville High School boys' and girls' basketball teams start the new year with games at Virginia City on Friday. Their first home games will be this Saturday, beginning at 4 p.m. Good luck, Wolves.
Health clinic
There will be a general clinic at the Walker Senior Center next Tuesday, Jan. 8, from noon to 1 p.m. This is another opportunity to have your blood pressure screened or obtain any immunizations you might need or want. Call the Mono County Health Department at (760) 924-1830 to schedule immunizations.
Antelope Valley Senior Citizen Workshop
All residents of our area over the age of 55 are automatically members of the workshop. They are encouraged to attend board meetings and give input on the matters being discussed for our seniors. The next board meeting is Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2:30 p.m., at the Walker Senior Center. Hope to see you there.
Thrift store looking for volunteers
If you have a few hours a week to spare and would like to do something very helpful for our community and senior citizens, please stop by the Walker Thrift Store or call (530) 495-1200 to discuss becoming a volunteer. They really need your assistance and will certainly appreciate any help you can give.
