The Sierra Lutheran boys' basketball team finished its most exhausting stretch of the season by winning two of four games in a five-day period.
The Falcons raced to an early lead against Gerlach and cruised to a 45-23 victory last week.
Juniors Zane Waite (15) and Lane Pawloski (9) and sophomore Jonah Young (9) led the scoring.
The following night, Sierra Lutheran visited Coleville and came up just short.
Coleville built a 10-point lead in the second half but the Falcons came back to take a 25-22 lead with less than a minute left in the game.
The Wolves managed to tie it up and Trevor Anderson hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to propel Coleville to the 30-27 victory.
Waite had 16 points in the loss.
After one day of rest, the Falcons took on Excel Christian out of Sparks.
Sierra Lutheran took a nine-point lead into halftime and expanded it to 20 by the end of the three quarters, pushing ahead to the big win.
Waite had 13, Pawloski had 10 and sophomore Bob DePaoli finished with 10. Junior Taylor Love contributed a strong defensive effort against Excel Christian's explosive scoring guard and held him to four points in the first three quarters.
The Falcons closed out the tough stretch with a 30-20 loss to Virginia City.
Waite again led the team with 11 points.
"I was pleased with the effort," coach Norm Brauer said. "We're playing without seniors this year and asking four sophomores to make contributions at the varsity level.
"They're developing nicely, but we just couldn't physically sustain the solid performances of the previous three games."
COLEVILLE BOYS
The Wolves took a 43-39 loss against Whittell as the Warriors got 14 points from Cody Nelson.
Erik Stevens led Coleville wit 11 points.
JV BOYS
Douglas was down to Hug 34-30 at the half Wednesday night, but the Tigers came back to make a game of it, taking a late lead before Hug pulled ahead for the win 61-59.
Kyle Heidt hit four 3-pointers, Tyler Hoelzen and Nick Hales did a solid job of attacking the basket and Timmy Rudnick had a strong defensive night for the Tigers.
FRESHMAN BOYS
Douglas picked up a 55-48 win over North Valleys Tuesday, getting 10 points from Ryan Moglich and solid efforts from Daniel Brady, Brett Anderson, Conner Gallego, Luis Pina and Chris Schonian.
The Tigers turned around and beat Hug 61-49 after both teams were tied after three quarters.
Douglas put together a 25-13 fourth as CJ Marcotte finished with 20 points, Chris Schonian scored 11, Luis Pina finished with seven, Brett Anderson had four and Conner Gallego had two.
FRESHMAN GIRLS
Douglas jumped out to a 28-17 lead at halftime against rival Carson last week and the game was ended shortly after halftime due to a coaching violation on Carson's part.
Douglas was then awarded the victory.
The Tigers were led by Ne'Jae Jackson with 12 points, CJ Baumgartner with five and Linnette Kenney and Christy Harvey with four each.
Brianna Rutherdale added three points for Douglas to round out the scoring.
On Saturday, Damonte Ranch handed Douglas its first league loss of the season, 50-42.
"It was a great game to watch and each team played their best," coach Steve Walsh said. "Obviously we would have liked to come away with the win, but we were very happy with our play."
Sara Mangiaracina led the team with 13 points, Jackson had 11, Baumgartner finished with eight, Rutherdale had five, Jamie Lorntzen had four and Kenney added one.
