After the South Tahoe boys basketball team hit baskets on its opening three possessions Friday night, it looked as though the Vikings were going to be able to make a ballgame of it against the No. 2 Douglas Tigers at South Tahoe.
Douglas built a slight lead at 14-12 through the first quarter but then found a way to get its defense clicking as the Tigers allowed just four field goals for the rest of the game, pulling away with a 55-33 win.
"We came out flat and our energy just wasn't there," Douglas coach Rob Streeter said. "We were just waiting for things to happen. We picked it up in the second quarter, I just told them to play harder and they were able to adjust.
"Starting out like that just says we're not coming in mentally prepared."
Dougla outscored the Vikings 20-4 in the second quarter, giving up only one field goal while going on runs of 6-0 and 14-0.
"Our defense was feeding the offense," Streeter said. "Once we got it going, we got some easy transitions and we got the tempo going a little bit more.
Douglas had the game well in hand by the midpoint of the third quarter, leading 41-19 at one point.
Streeter was able to clear his starters off the floor to give them some much-needed rest for Saturday's matchup against No. 4 Hug and give the reserves a chance to make up for 16-point fourth-quarter debacle in the first go-around with the Vikings.
This time around, Douglas outscored South Tahoe 15-7 to close out the game.
"The reserves came in and redeemed themselves a little bit for last time," Streeter said. "I thought they did a real good job tonight of sustaining the lead and even building on it."
Douglas (19-6 overall, 9-1 in Sierra League) spread its scoring around to all but three players as Keith Olson led the way with an 11-point night.
Mike Gransbery and David Laird each scored eight, James McLaughlin and Kevin Emm each had seven, Nate Whalin and Herman Fillmore each scored six, Joe Nady had three and Jeff Nady had two.
South Tahoe got a game-high 14 points from K.J. Allister, seven of which came at the free throw line.
The Douglas girls' basketball team overcame a slow start, trailing 8-5 after one quarter, to pick up a 37-25 win over South Tahoe.
Dany Heidt led the way for the Tigers, scoring 11 points with one 3-pointer.
Bridget Maestretti had seven, Jessica Waggoner and Dana Pardee each had six, Taryn Williams scored four and Katie Buffo finished with three.
Douglas improved to 11-14 overall and 5-5 in league play on the year.
