Things were over pretty early for the Douglas wrestling team at the Nevada 4A state championships over the weekend.
Each of the six wrestlers the Tigers sent suffered a loss in the first two round, but three fought their way through the consolation brackets to claim fourth-place finishes.
Seniors Ryan Pruitt and Sean Molina each finished with a fourth-place finish, as did 112-pounder Garrett Hekhuis.
Hekhuis pinned Foothill's Joel Olivas in the first round, but dropped a 6-0 decision to Mojave's Jake Evans 6-0.
He beat Coronado's Mark Rillera 6-0 and pinned Las Vegas' Hugo Carrillo in 2:41 to advance to the consolation final before taking a tough 2-1 loss to Carson's Owen Craugh.
Damonte Ranch's Jordan O'Neal went on to win the state championship in that class.
At 152 pounds, Pruitt beat Green Valley's Bobby Burns 4-3 in the first round. Eventual state champion Kyle Barrett handed Pruitt a 5-3 loss in the quarterfinals.
He turned around in the consolation bracket and pinned Louis Russo of Sage Ridge in 1:53.
Mojave's David Jordan took an 11-7 victory in the consolation finals.
Molina, who was coming off a regional title in the 189-pound bracket, pinned Durango's Rafael Penha to open things up, but lost to Las Vegas' Zach Williams 2:42 in the second.
Molina pinned Reno's Scott Gettings in 1:44 and then lost to Basic's Garrett Muro 13-5 in the consolation finals.
Devin Barker (140), Jake Williams (160) and Tony Ferris (171) each lost their first two matches of the tournament.
Douglas finished 10th overall in the state standings, with Mojave claiming the state title.
Cimarron-Memorial (2nd place), Las Vegas, Damonte Ranch, Fallon, Green Valley, Carson, Galen and Palo Verde rounded out the rest of the top 10 in order.
Which Northern 4A school last won a team state title? See answer below
With as much setup as there was to a potential first-round rematch of Douglas and Galena in the Northern 4A Regional basketball playoffs this week, it appears that the two teams probably won't see each other until next year.
Galena's losses to Manogue and Elko last week ended up pushing Manogue up into the No. 2 seed out of the High Desert League. A win in either of those games would've matched the Grizzlies up with the Tigers in the first round. Douglas has beaten Galena in each of the schools' last three playoff meetings.
"No matter who you end up playing over there from the High Desert, you'll have your hands full," Douglas coach Werner Christen said. "We know a little bit about Manogue. They are very good, they play hard and they are well-coached.
"They play the game the way it is supposed to be played."
The game will be at Manogue Tuesday at 7 p.m.
"We told the kids that they shouldn't have any reason to be nervous because they've basically been in the playoffs for the last two weeks already," said Christen, whose Tigers had two win five of their last six games, all against teams in contention for the playoffs, to clinch the No. 3 seed in the Sierra League.
"We're happy with the way we're playing right now. They kids are excited. It's a fun time of year and we have some playoff experience. It should be a great game. Both teams will play hard and we'll see who comes out on top."
The Coleville High School girls' basketball team won the first Western 1A League title in the school's history with a tight 51-49 victory over Smith Valley Friday.
Skyler Isbell scored the winning basket with five seconds left in the game off an assist from Kimberly Torley.
Isbell finished the game with eight points and 13 rebounds. Torley scored 22 points and had 16 rebounds.
Wooster had a spree of state titles from 1996 through 1998, each of which came during Nevada's super state format, and took the 3A title in 1994 for good measure.
Cimarron-Memorial and Las Vegas have claimed each title since, until Mojave worked its way into the mix this year, topping both schools by at least 24 points.
