A breeze can be expected on just about any day in Carson Valley but there was not a wisp when fourth-graders at Scarselli Elementary School ran a flag that had flown over the nation's Capitol up the flagpole Thursday.

The flag was a gift from Sen. Harry Reid and was presented to the school by Reid's representative, Yolanda Garcia.

The event was orchestrated by members of the Lions Club, Ron Santi, Tom Cheney and Terry Remer. The Lions Club celebrates February nationally as flag month. The Lions have presented flags to Piñon Hills and Gardnerville elementary schools in past years.

"This flag flew over the nation's Capitol and now it will fly over your school and be yours forever," said Santi.

Each fourth-grader received a small flag from the Lions.

"This small flag is just as valuable as the largest flag ever made," said Cheney. "Be proud of it and respect it as you would any other flag."

Cheney told the students that the flag has been known by many names since the first was made in 1777 - Old Glory, The Stars and Stripes, The Star-Spangled Banner.

"Whatever the name, it means 'freedom,'" he said. "Be proud to be an American."

Cassidy Champlin, 10, came dressed for the occasion in a star-spangled sweater. She said she didn't know about the flag presentation that day.

"My mom put my clothes out. I think she knew," said Cassidy. "I don't dress myself or I'd come out with different colors."

The students sang "God Bless America" and located Nevada's star in the blue field on their own flags.

A little girl ran up to principal Brandon Swain, waving her flag.

"Mr. Swain, how long do we get to keep the flags?"

"Forever," he said.

"Yay."
