The Nicole Snyder Memorial Fund is offering various scholarships for Douglas High School students graduating in the 2006-07 academic year who wish to pursue their studies at any level of post-secondary education.

A $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student participating in the varsity softball program during the 2007 season and two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to one male student and one female student participating in any varsity sports program during the 2006-07 school year.

Applicants will show they are motivated by a love of sports and hard work to accomplish goals by submitting a one- to two-page essay describing how softball/sports play a positive role in their lives.

Several $1,000 non-sports scholarships will be awarded to students who demonstrate integrity, leadership, an ability to face life's challenges, determination and perseverance in overcoming adversity, and a desire to contribute to society.

This award also requires a one- to two-page essay on one of five topics listed on the application.

Applicants must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA. Students receiving a full tuition scholarship from another source will not be eligible.

Along with the essay, applicants must submit an application, student transcript verifying GPA and an autobiography.

Applications are available in the Douglas High School scholarship office or by contacting John and Patti Snyder at 265-6447.

Completed application packages may be dropped off at the Douglas scholarship office or mailed to the Nicole Snyder Memorial Fund, 1407 Selkirk Circle, Gardnerville, NV, 89460.

Applications must be received by March 30.

Snyder memorial dinner Feb. 26

The Block D Letterman's Club at Douglas High School will host the Nicole Snyder Memorial Dinner at the Barone & Reed Food Company Feb. 26 from 5 p.m. to closing.

It will mark the third consecutive year that Block D has honored Snyder's memory with the dinner.

Snyder, a multi-sport standout at Douglas, was killed in a car accident on Highway 395 near Genoa Lane in July 2004.

Barone & Reed has donated a portion of its proceeds from the dinner each year. Funs raised have helped fund the Nicole Snyder Memorial Scholarships.

"Nicole's memory and life truly are inspirational and she should not be forgotten," said Block D adviser Ernie Monfiletto. "This dinner is the least Block D can do in her memory.

"Hopefully she will not have died in vein and young people will be more careful while driving."

The scholarships are given annually to athletes that excel on the playing field, in the classroom and in the community.

Block D, the varsity letterman's club at the high school, strives to promote leadership, community service, role models, school pride and sportsmanship.

This year alone, the club has raised substantial funds for the annual turkey drive at Thanksgiving, new welcome mats at the Douglas High School gym and a large mural painted on the rear wall of the gym.

Barone & Reed is located at 1599 Esmeralda Ave., in Minden. Donations can also be made to the Block D Club. For more information, contact Monfiletto at 782-5136.
