Zoo brings elephant-sized surprise

My neighbor, Alice, told me a great story about her husband Ray's granddaughter, Andrea. All her life she has enjoyed going to the zoo wherever she has been. Her special favorites of all the animals have always been the elephants. Recently, her boyfriend asked her if she wanted to go to the zoo that afternoon, which was great with her.

They walked around and ended up at the elephants' area. She was standing there, looking at them when one of the elephants came over to the fence and looked back at her; then he put his trunk out through the fence toward her.

Held curled in his trunk there was a small box, which he gave to her.

She took the box from him, opened it, and discovered an engagement ring. It turns out that her boyfriend had gone to the zoo and talked with the elephant trainer, who helped orchestrate the whole surprise. What a clever and romantic way to become engaged. Now, let's see the rest of you guys top that one.

Basketball vs. sheriffs

The game between the Coleville High boys' team and the Mono County Sheriff's Department will be this Saturday at the school gym. Doors will open 5 p.m., with the game starting at 6 p.m. It was a fun game last year, so try to attend and cheer them all on.

This and that

A retirement dinner for longtime paramedic Pete Levy was held last Saturday at the Topaz Lodge, attended by about 140 people who wanted to thank Pete and wish him well in retirement. He received some honoring plaques and the gift of a beautiful painting of his beloved dogs.

We wish him the best in his future activities and will miss the care and concern he has given to our community through his 31 years with the paramedics.

Day-light Saving time starts Sunday, March 11 this year, a month earlier than in past years, so get ready to set your clocks forward.
