The Nicole Snyder Memorial Fund is offering various scholarships for Douglas High School students graduating in the 2006-07 academic year who wish to pursue their studies at any level of post-secondary education.


A $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student participating in the varsity softball program during the 2007 season and two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to one male student and one female student participating in any varsity sports program during the 2006-07 school year.


Applicants will show they are motivated by a love of sports and hard work to accomplish one's goals by submitting a one- to two-page essay describing how softball/sports play a positive role in their lives.


Several $1,000 non-sports scholarships will be awarded to students who demonstrate integrity, leadership, an ability to face life's challenges, determination and perseverance in overcoming adversity, and a desire to contribute to society.


This award also requires a one- to two-page essay on one of five topics listed on the application.


Applicants must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA. Students receiving a full tuition scholarship from another source will not be eligible.


Along with the essay, applicants must submit an application, student transcript verifying GPA and an autobiography.


Applications are available in the Douglas High School scholarship office or by contacting John and Patti Snyder at 265-6447.


Completed application packages may be dropped off at the Douglas scholarship office or mailed to the Nicole Snyder Memorial Fund, 1407 Selkirk Circle, Gardnerville, NV, 89460.


Applications must be received by March 30.




Carson Valley Chukar Club dinner


The 21st annual Carson Valley Chukar Club fundraiser event is scheduled for March 3 at 5 p.m. at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.


The event draws about 700 individuals every year and in 2006, the club raised more than $72,000 towards wildlife presentation.


Dinner includes tri-tip, homemade beans and tossed salad.


Rifles, shotguns, fishing equipment, wildlife artwork and an array of outdoor equipment will be available for raffle and auction.


Cocktails start at 6 p.m. and the program begins at 7 p.m.


Cost is $25 for adults and $15 for under 18, which includes yearly dues and dinner.


All children in attendance must be a minimum of 16 years of age.

Hurricanes seeking players


The Carson Valley Hurricanes girls' fastpitch softball club is looking for athletes to complete its rosters for the U16 and U14 teams.

Girls' softball sign-ups


The Carson Valley Girls Softball Association is accepting sign-ups for the 2007 season.


Sign-up dates are March 3 from noon to 3 p.m.


All sign-ups will be at the Douglas County Parks & Recreation annex building across from Lampe Park.


Sign-up fees are $65 (ages 5 though 7), $70 (8 and older) and $150 maximum (family rate).


New players must bring copies of birth certificates. Returning players should bring completed registration forms.


Players must be age 5 as of Jan. 1, 2007 to be eligible to play and eligibility in each division is based on age as of Jan. 1, 2007 as well.

Youth volleyball registration


The Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department is taking registration for the youth volleyball league for grades 5-8 and teen volleyball league for grades 9-12.


Registration will run through March 9 and the season begins on March 31.


Games will be played on Saturdays at Carson Valley Middle School and practices will run one evening each week.


Cost is $60 per child and includes eight regular season games, a single-elimination tournament for seventh- and eighth-graders only, uniforms and participation awards for all.


Volunteers to coach the teams and sponsors to keep costs down are also being sought.

The Nevada Lightning 94 girls' 12-under fastpitch softball team is looking for players to complete its 2007 tournament roster.

CVI spring golf outing


The 18th annual Carson Valley Inn Spring Stag Golf Outing is April 26-29 at the two Genoa Lakes courses.


The Friday round will be at the Genoa Resort course and the Saturday round will be at the Genoa Lakes course.


The 36-hole scramble has proven to be a popular kick-off to the Northern Nevada golf season with players attending from throughout the West coast.


Players can come in teams of four or be teamed with others. Non-cash awards will be given to the top teams in each flight along with drawing prizes and closest-to-the-hole prizes.


Each participant also receives a souvenir tournament shirt and hat.

Little League fundraiser


Carson Valley Little League will conduct its first fundraiser golf tournament April 21 at the Carson Valley Golf Course in Gardnerville.


Play begins at 9 a.m. and numerous prizes will be offered. Cost is $100 per person and all proceeds will go toward Little League baseball in the Valley.


"This is the first time we've ever tried something like this," said board member Mike Gamberg. "If it goes well, we'd like to make it an annual thing."


Carson Valley Little League will be looking for sponsors for holes and is seeking donations for prizes.

Kids' Fishing Derby


The dates for the 18th annual Kids' Fishing Derby at Lampe Park have been set for June 2 and 3 at Lampe Park.


The fish for the derby are being raised at Mason Valley Hatchery and Lahontan Hatchery. Derby organizers will also be purchasing fish from American Trout & Salmon out of Susanville, Calif.


This year, the grand prize for the raffle drawing will be a Kuzuma Pro 90 ATV with gloves and a helmet. A Playstation 3 console, and a guided salmon trip from Success Fishing Guide along with many other prizes have been donated.


Raffle tickets are $1 or six for $5 and can be purchased at Douglas County Parks & Recreation.

Each ticket this year will receive a free soft serve cone from McDonald's.


Organizers are in need of approximately 300-plus volunteers to help with the event.


More than 2,200 children are expected to participate in the derby this year, making it one of the largest free fishing derbies west of the Mississippi River.

Old Guys Basketball


Men 35 and older interested in playing pickup basketball are invited to the basketball court in the Pastoral Center at St. Gall Catholic Church every Sunday at 4 p.m. and Wednesday at 7 p.m.


After teams are chosen, games go either full-court or half-court depending on how many show up. The sessions are strictly for fun and exercise.


Cost is $50, which is donated to the church for court upkeep. The sessions run from September to June.
