Girls' basketball: Lady Tigers go 2-3 at Centennial Tournament in Las Vegas

After picking up a win over Canyon Springs in the first round of the Centennial Bulldog Classic in Las Vegas last week, the Douglas girls' basketball team played some tight games against some of the state's best teams in the final four games of the tournament.


The Tigers dropped a 51-43 game to Silverado, a team that beat Galena earlier in the year and won Douglas' pool at the Las Vegas tournament, on Wednesday.


Douglas took a 35-33 lead into the fourth quarter, but Silverado was able to come back for the win.


Jessica Waggoner led the Tigers with 15 points and 18 rebounds in the game while Sarah Hartley had eight points and Bridget Maestretti had six points.


Nicole Didero scored four points and had five rebounds, Allie Hughes had three points and five rebounds and Kaela Horse hit a 3-pointer.


Taryn Williams scored two points and had five rebounds and Michelle Richardson added two as well.


On Thursday, Douglas fell to Northern No. 5 Spring Creek 44-36 as Waggoner scored 17 points with eight rebounds and four steals.


Waggoner was limited to only three minutes of playing time in the first half after getting into early foul trouble.


Maestretti scored eight points and had four assists, Williams had four points and five rebounds and Richardson had four points.


Hartley and Hughes each scored two points and Gina Pfaffenberger had one.


Didero finished with seven rebounds.


Douglas bounced back later in the day with a 54-46 win over VoTech.


Waggoner had a career-high 29 points, going 7-for-13 from the free throw line and 11-for-16 from the field.


She also hauled in 16 rebounds and three steals.


Williams scored 10 points in the win, Hughes had five points with a 3-pointer and three steals and Hartley scored four points to go with six assists.


Lisa Christen, Katie Buffo and Horse each finished with two points.


The Tigers wrapped up the tournament with a close 48-45 loss to Green Valley.


Douglas made a late charge against the Gators, outscoring them 26-25 in the second half as Waggoner had 19 points and 13 rebounds.


Dany Heidt finished with nine points, Williams had eight, Nicole Didero had five with four rebounds and Hartley and Maestretti each finished with two.


Maestretti had six steals as well.


Douglas finished its non-league slate with a 6-10 record. The Tigers were scheduled to host Wooster tonight but that game has been moved to later in the month.


Instead, Douglas next plays at North Valleys Tuesday night at 5:15 p.m.
