Stateline resident Lawrence Howell is the new face on Douglas County's planning commission following his appointment in January. He replaces Nancy McDermid, who was elected to the Douglas County Board of Commissioners in November.

"I believe I have the necessary education, experience and enthusiasm to add value to this very important advisory board," Howell said.

An executive director with Rite of Passage Inc., Howell has served on a number of local public entities over the years, including the Barton Hospital Foundation and Douglas County Sheriff Search and Rescue.

Bob Conner, who was appointed to the planning commission in December 2003, won his bid for another term. Rick Ross, also won his second bid for a seat.

Both were appointed for partial terms, replacing commissioners who resigned before their term was complete.

Planning commission members provide advice on land use planning matters, review development applications for compliance with county ordinances and provide oversight in the master plan process. Seven members hold four-year terms.

Other appointments are as follows:

n Airport Advisory Committee, John Marsalis, Robert Trumbly and Wayne Ferree.

n Genoa Historic District Commission, Marian Vassar and Ron Bommarito.

n Douglas County Law Library Board, John Dicks and Bonnie Rogers

n Parks and Recreation Commission, Mark Neuffer, Kelly Gardner and Anthony Malerba.

n Senior Services Advisory Council, Lloyd Higuera, Jeri Shields and Minda Villoria.

n Water Conveyance Advisory Committee, David Hussman and Domingo Uhart

n Douglas County Library Board of Trustees, Lloyd Higuera and Bonnie Rogers

Appointments to the board of equalization and ratemaking committee were continued, due primarily to a lack of applicants.
