Absconder arrested in Reno

A 44-year-old man who walked away from a substance abuse treatment program before he was to be sent back to prison for felony driving under the influence was arrested Monday in Reno.

Jeffrey McManus and Johanna Thomas, 42, were arrested at an apartment in Reno at 11:30 p.m.

District Judge Dave Gamble appointed lawyer Derrick Lopez to represent McManus. The judge said the defendant was in no condition to appear in court Tuesday and set a hearing for Feb. 6

McManus was to be sentenced last March for a second felony DUI, but was allowed to undergo treatment first. He left without permission after two days at the Sierra Recovery Center.

At the time of his arrest Dec. 21, 2005, McManus told a judge he was using heroin and methamphetamine.

He was arrested for felony driving under the influence, battery on an officer and hit and run. Deputies received a report that McManus appeared to be unconscious behind the wheel when his car rolled across Highway 395 and hit a car in the turn lane on Jacks Valley Road.

Thomas was arrested last March and charged with two counts of felony child abuse after deputies found her Johnson Lane home piled high with garbage when they went to investigate why her two children weren't in school.

-- The owner of a home in the 1300 block of Tanzy Court in Fish Springs reported several weapons and collectors' coins were taken in a burglary.

The victim said he returned to his home on Jan. 29 and noticed the front door standing open.

He discovered that someone entered his home through an unlocked garage door, and forced open an interior door to gain access.

The man said a gun cabinet was pried open and several weapons were missing including a rifle, a shotgun, three handguns and a holster.

He estimated total value of the missing items at $1,960.

-- A Gardnerville Ranchos man was jailed on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon after he reportedly went after two cable company employees with a baseball bat and an air gun.

John Michael Imhoff, 48, was arrested at his residence Jan. 27 after one of the men called for help.

According to the victims, they arrived at the residence to fix an outside cable problem. The suspect's wife allegedly asked the men to leave, but later said they could stay.

Suddenly, they said, Imhoff came out yelling and swinging the bat. He hit the fence, then pulled out what the pair believed to be a gun from his belt and put the weapon to the tip of one of the men's nose.

The other man called deputies and the suspect went back in the house.

Deputies talked him out of the residence and he reportedly showed them the bat and the weapon which was a black air gun used to fire plastic projectiles.

The deputies reported that the box advised caution and that the gun may cause serious injury.

The two men were not injured.

-- A 61-year-old California man was charged with a third offense of driving under the influence after he reportedly was intoxicated while firing weapons at the Douglas County shooting range.

Charles James Rumrill was pulled over on Pinenut Road on Jan. 26 after a deputy observed him swerving across the road.

The deputy said Rumrill was so drunk, he couldn't maintain his balance and they placed him in a patrol car so he wouldn't fall.

A preliminary breath test indicated his blood alcohol content at .170, more than twice the legal limit of .08 for driving.

A search of Rumrill's record indicated he had two convictions for DUI in July 2001 and his driver's license was suspended.

Deputies found a Smith and Wesson .38 special and a Colt .38 special in his vehicle with a knife and extra ammunition.

-- A Douglas County Jail inmate was charged with possession of a dangerous weapon Jan. 29 when deputies found a shank he allegedly sharpened from an eyeglasses frame.

Skyler Williams, 42, was charged with the new offense after the weapon was found in a search of the jail.

Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tom Mezzetta said deputies believe Williams snapped the arm off the glasses frame and sharpened the ends.

-- Graffiti was reported at Westwood Park in Minden and the cluster mailboxes at Wheeler and Cahi Circle in the Gardnerville Ranchos.

Someone sprayed "SUR13," "NORTENOXIV," "U-C-IT," "REZ SIDE," and an obscenity on the cluster boxes.

A Minden town employee said someone sprayed "SUR" and "13" on the pump house at Westwood Park.

The damage was discovered Jan. 29.

-- A Carson City man who reportedly walked out of Wal-Mart without paying for two iPods was charged with burglary and grand theft.

Justin Johnson, 18, was jailed Jan. 29 on $35,500 bail.

Store personnel said watched Johnson walk through the store with two other men, one of whom reportedly pried open the case which contained the iPods.

Johnson allegedly placed two of the MP3 players in his pocket and exited the store. He was apprehended outside, but the other two fled the scene.

The iPods were valued at $248.44 each.

Johnson reportedly told deputies he planned to keep one iPod and sell the second to a friend for $100.

He also was charged with possession of marijuana.
