The Sleeping Elephant fire is burning away from Topaz Ranch Estates and heading east toward Topaz Lake.
There are flames visible on the top of the ridge of Wild Oat Mountain, but the fire has been beaten back away from Highway 208.
The area around Sleeping Elephant Ranch was burned in the fire, but there has been no report of damage to structures.
A west wind is blowing the fire back on itself.
Nearly 100 firefighters battled the blaze from East Fork Fire Protection District, Mason Valley Fire Department, U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management.
There were two air tankers, three helicopters, 20 engines, a hand crew and three command staff at the scene.
Up to 300 structures were threatened as the fire moved across grassy flats on a quarter-mile wide front.
