Driver in fatal remains hospitalized

A Gardnerville driver involved in a head-on collision in which four people were killed remained hospitalized Thursday in Reno with internal injuries.

Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman Chuck Allen said Dawn Katherine Miley, 42, is still hospitalized at Renown Regional Medical Center.

Allen said Wednesday it could be weeks before toxicology reports are complete to determine if drugs or alcohol were involved or whether Miley's diabetes was a contributing factor to the fatal collision Saturday on Highway 395 south of Gardnerville, he said.

"Ms. Miley was treated at the scene by paramedics to stabilize her blood sugar," Allen said. "That's why we are looking at one of the reasons for the crash being her medical condition."

The victims - a Torrance, Calif., couple and their two children - were driving northbound on Highway 395 when authorities say Miley's sports utility vehicle drifted across the double-yellow line and collided with their pickup truck about 3 p.m. Saturday.

They were identified as Jerome Albino Calevro, 58; his wife, Maria Amelia, 52; daughter Bernadette, 23, and son Jerome Daniel, 15.

Allen said the highway patrol's Special Investigative Response Team continued to follow up on the tragedy.

According to a news story published July 17 in the Torrance, Calif., Daily Breeze, the Calevros were on their way to a timeshare at Lake Tahoe for a family vacation when the accident occurred.

"This was a wonderful family - all working people, hardworking people, very decent people," family friend Yolanda Le Bayon told the Daily Breeze.

Maria Calevro taught students at 186th Street School in Gardena. Her husband was a dietician at a retirement home. Their daughter took classes at El Camino College and their son was a student at South High School in Torrance.

The Calevros were traveling north in their green 1998 Dodge truck when the crash occurred. Miley was in a green 2002 Suzuki sport utility vehicle.

Allen said Miley veered onto the right edge of the southbound lanes, striking a road marker, then re-entered the lanes and crossed into oncoming traffic.

The father, mother and daughter were wearing seat belts, but died at the scene.

The son was not wearing a seat belt, Allen said. The northbound lane of Highway 395 was closed for more than four hours to investigate the crash.
