Counting down to kickoff: Reed, Manogue head Douglas football schedule

The tentative fall sports schedules at Douglas High School have been released, and the defending Sierra League champion Tiger football team will be the first to get in action with a Aug. 24 matchup against defending High Desert League champion Reed at the recently-completed Keith Duke Roman Field at the Big George Ventures Sports Complex in Minden.

After spending all but the final two weeks of the season on the road last season while work on the artificial surface, Douglas will get to enjoy five games on its home turf this year, starting with Reed.

The Tigers get the week of Aug. 31 off before a tough Sept. 1 match-up at defending Northern 4A Regional runner-up Bishop Manogue. It will be the Tigers' first regular-season matchup against the Miners since Manogue joined the Northern 4A several years ago. Ironically, Manogue served as Douglas' home field twice last year against McQueen and Carson.

Douglas hosts Fallon the next week, another team the Tigers haven't seen in years, and then launches into league play with a Saturday game at Wooster.

The Tigers then host the perennially-tough Hug Hawks and Reno Huskies on consecutive Friday nights and then travel for the first time to Damonte Ranch on Oct. 5.

They return home Oct. 12 for a game against North Valleys, which has shown much improvement in the last two years and travel the next week to South Tahoe.

They wrap up the regular season at Carson on Oct. 25 as the annual rivalry game moves back to its traditional spot at the end of the year after two years of the team's meeting early on the schedule.

In total, the Tigers will play three Saturday games (Manogue, Wooster and South Tahoe) and a school-record seven games on artificial turf.

The new field will get plenty of use this fall as the boys' soccer team has scheduled its marquee home matchups against defending state champ South Tahoe, rival Carson, and annual contender Reno for 7 p.m. start times on the football field under the lights.

While the girls' team has not released a schedule yet, it is likely they'll follow suit.

The Tiger volleyball team will open its season down south at the Las Vegas Invitational Aug. 25-26 and will then travel to Bishop Manogue.

The Tigers open their home slate against Fallon, a team they haven't seen in regular season play in several years and will then compete in the prestigious Galena tournament the weekend of Sept. 8.

The boys' and girls' tennis teams will take on perennial power Galena early on in their schedules.

Douglas' girls' golf team, coming off a breakout season, won't get a home tournament this year but will travel to Hug, North Valleys, Damonte Ranch, Carson, Wooster and Reno.

In cross country, the Tigers will have two home meets for the second year in a row, with its first opening the season on Aug. 31.

Voluntary offseason conditioning sessions and workouts for the high school are being conducted throughout the summer.

In order to participate, athletes must have been cleared through the high school athletic department.

Douglas is offering a final drug, alcohol and tobacco presentation Aug. 8 at 6 p.m. in the high school commons.
