World line class record broken at Lahontan

Hello fellow anglers.

Well, whoever said there wasn't a pot o' gold at the end of a rainbow has never met Dan Hannum.

Dan was recently fishing on the Lahontan Reservoir, located between Silver Springs and Fallon off Highway 50.

He is no stranger to this lake. On Sept. 5, 2004 Dan caught the Nevada state record Wiper. A wiper is a cross between a striped bass and a white bass. The fish weighed 18.8 pounds.

Well, Mr. Hannum has done it again. Dan Hannum now has the new Nevada state record and the I.G.F.A. world record line class record, which is still pending at this time. Dan's catch was a 25.38-pound Wiper with a 27-inch girth. It was 36.5 inches long.

Hannum, formerly of South Lake Tahoe, now resides in Dayton and is the owner operator of Pro Clean carpet and upholstery cleaning in Carson Valley.

The world all tackle record is 27.5 pounds for Wipers.

My Naw hat is off to you Dan, great job. Now for our local fishing reports.

LAKE TAHOE: Trolling 50 to 200 feet at Dollar, Sugar Pine and Cal/Neva points have been the most productive. Average mackinaws have come in 2 to 10 pounds. Some rainbows have been reported 2 to 7 pounds trolling from Ski Run to the Nevada Beach area in 50 to 70 feet of water.

With the daily temperatures, the key is to start extremely early and still have time for brunch. As the sun rises, the bite goes away.

Gene St. Denis was scuba diving by Ski Run and came upon a strange object of interest swimming on the bottom. Gene got closer to see that it was a 10-inch catfish swimming along. Wow, talk about some good fillets. For more information, call Blue Ribbon Charters at (530) 544-6552.

CAPLES LAKE: The lake has been good for planters 1 to 5 pound rainbows. The brown action has slowed a bit. Some have been caught from a boat for anglers casting sinking rapalas towards the shore near rocky and fallen tree branches, using a long jerk method. The ramp and general store are open for all you need or forgot to bring.

For more information, call the Caples Lake Resort at (209) 258-8888. The lake is scheduled to be planted this week by the California Department of Fish & Game.

RED LAKE: Anglers have had fair luck for brook and rainbow trout. Best action has been on the west side of the lake using worms or small spinners.

CARSON RIVERS: The east fork is running real nice still. Because of the Death Ride last weekend, not many anglers ventured to far up river. Jeremy Mendoza From Jackson, Calif., caught a nice stringer of rainbows, while Donald Pierce from San Jose caught two 2-pound rainbows and 3 pan-size fish.

The west fork is running good in most places and holds a lot of catchable rainbows. A young man by the name of Dominique caught a nice 6.8-pound rainbow. For more information, call the Carson River Resort at (877) 694-2229.

BLUE LAKES: Fishing has been good for pan-sized rainbows. Many limits reported. The upper lake has had better success. Both upper and lower lakes are scheduled to be planted this week by CDFG.

INDIAN CREEK RES: Water is getting low and the weeds are starting to take over. Last Sunday morning I walked the entire lake with a fly rod and a spinning rod to catch nothing but a sunburn and a heck of a lot of salad.

Warning to boaters, the water by the launch is very low. Please use caution, the bottom is near and the buoy has a lot of weeds all around it. My advice is to fish near the dam in a small boat or float tube. For more information, call the Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters at (530) 542-8208.

TOPAZ LAKE: The report I received from Don Quilici of Carson is no anglers and many jetskis and waterskiers. If you want to fish, do it early and deep. For more information, call the Topaz Marina at 266-3550.

ALPINE LAKE: Located on top of Highway 4, the lake has been planted by CDFG. A great place to get away from the hustle and bustle. If not to fish, a beautiful place to hike and picnic.

Good luck in your outdoor adventures, If you get a photo of your catch you can e-mail it to jcrandall@recordcourier.com or you can drop it of at The Record-Courier on Highway 395 in Gardnerville. If you have any questions in our fishing world, call the Naw line at 267-9722. Good fishin' and tight lines.
