Doris Bliss
1925-2007
A celebration of life will be held in Carson Valley area this fall for Doris Bliss, 82, of Peachtree City, Ga., who died July 13, 2007. Mrs. Bliss moved to Nevada in 1954. A longtime resident of the state of Nevada, she lived in Las Vegas, Reno, and Minden.
Her greatest passion in life was the many rocks and minerals found in the hills and mountains surrounding Carson Valley. She often led groups of friends and family on expeditions to find Indian artifacts and rocks.
She was loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Mrs. Bliss was preceded in death by her husband, Sidney and her son, Jack.
She is survived by her daughter, September Holstad and her husband Tor; son, Guy Bliss and his wife Krissy; sister, Opal Baldwin; step-children, Judy Gurevitch, Richard Bliss; four grandchildren; four half-sisters; one half-brother. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make donations to Southwest Christian Care in her memory, 7225 Lester Road, Union City, GA 30291. Maxine Ruth Pecnick
1920-2007
Maxine Ruth Pecnick, a 10-year resident of Gardnerville, died July 26, 2007, in Carson City. She was 87.
Mrs. Pecnick was born June 21, 1920, in Omaha, Neb., to Earl and Ruth Flannagan Homer. A high school graduate, she married Charles Carl Pecnick in Lakewood, Wash. She was a retired employee of the State of Nevada. She enjoyed doing house and yard renovations.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charles C. Pecnick. She is survived by her son Terry Carl Pecnick, daughter Patricia Joy Smith, sister and brother-in-law, Walt Alois Walter and Earldene Bernice Walter, two grandchildren, one great-grandchild and 12 nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are in the care of Fitzhenry's Funeral Home in Carson City.
Roland A. Van Ostrand
1917-2007
A funeral service was July 20 at Quiram-Sycamore Funeral Home in Sycamore, Ill., for Roland A. Van Ostrand, 89, who died July 14, 2007, at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
A resident of Gardnerville for 11 months, Mr. Van Ostrand was born Dec. 30, 1917, in York County, Neb., to Roy and Elsie Condreay Van Ostrand. He married Leta Berglund on May 18, 1940, in her parents home on a farm near Benedict, Neb. They moved to Illinois in January 1941 and farmed near Hampshire for two years, then moved near Sycamore where they lived for 63 years. He farmed until 1972, then worked at Duplex Products, retiring in December 1982.
He attended Sycamore United Methodist Church and was a former member of the DeKalb County Farm Bureau. He was also a very handy person and helped many people.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Leta Van Ostrand, in 2005, two brothers Arthur and Clarence; and one sister-in-law, Margaret Van Ostrand. He is survived by a daughter, Joyce and her husband Gerald Wensmann of Gardnerville; a son Neil and his wife Linda Van Ostrand of Sycamore, Ill.; four grandchildren Lynn Carlson and Crystal and husband Roy Brauns all of California, Matt and his wife Jen Van Ostrand of Madison, Wis., and Angie Van Ostrand of Sycamore; five great-grandchildren, Harlee and Dacey Carlson and Brandon, Kyle and Kaitlin Brauns, all of California and sister-in-law Theresia Van Ostrand.
