Magiko opens with Wings of Change at airport

The Wings of Change air show is the opening event for Magiko, a two-week celebration of summertime in Carson Valley. Magiko means "magical" in Basque but it also means outdoor concerts, farmers markets, golf tournaments, lessons in art and area history, food and shopping.

Magiko is June 22 through July 6, and incorporates things to do and see in Minden, Gardnerville, Genoa and Topaz Lake.

Wings of Change, at the Minden-Tahoe Airport on June 23 and 24, is an event for the whole family. The air show and open house features a balloon launch, aerobatic performers, vintage planes, food and information booths. There is no charge for the air shows, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 23 and 9 a.m. to noon June 24.

Tickets are on sale for the USO Hangar Party, 6-10:30 p.m. June 23. The dinner, dance and silent auction are at the Hutt Aviation hangar at Minden-Tahoe Airport, 1146 Airport Road, Minden. Music is by Mile High Jazz Band.

Magiko continues with the Carson Valley ShopAround with discounts at dozens of participating businesses. Farmers markets, arts and antiques shows, walking tours and wine tastings are also scheduled.

Magiko means the Carson Valley Grand Slam Classic Golf Tournament, the Minden Run4Fun and biking and hiking at the Tour of Carson Valley Barbecue and Ice Cream Social at Mormon Station State Park in Genoa.

Music is featured at the Heritage Park arts festival with wine, food and a free outdoor concert featuring Ambrosia and Gary Wright, and at the Pops in the Park Fourth of July celebration with the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra in Genoa.

Sponsored by the Carson Valley Visitors Authority, Douglas County and GE Energy, Magiko is a cooperative effort between the towns, businesses and organizations of Carson Valley to celebrate and showcase the region and its history.

Be a part of Magiko - volunteers needed for Minden Run4Fun:

Are you able to slice fruit and bagels? How are your crowd-control skills? Can you pass out bottles of water and T-shirts? Do you like ice cream?

People of many talents are needed to volunteer in the 5K and 10K Minden Run4Fun in Syncon Homes Community Park, June 24. The event needs volunteers of all ages and experience levels who will receive an event T-shirt and an invitation to the post-race party with a barbecue, live music and ice cream.
