Fire restrictions established

Warmer temperatures, lower humidity and high winds have prompted federal and state fire officials to implement fire restrictions.

Fres outside of a developed fee campground or picnic area, smoking, welding, setting off explosives without a permit, use or possession of fireworks, tracer rounds, steel-core ammunition or any other incendiatry device or open burning are all prohibited.

In addition, the Nevada Division of Forestry is prohibiting operation of off-road vehicles off hard surface gravel roads or dirt roads in wildland areas or operating vehicles in wildland areas without an axe, shovel, and one gallon of water.

Use of charcoal stoves is discouraged in favor of propane or white gas stoves, as charcoal burns longer and hotter than wood and while it might appear to be extinguished, it might still be harboring embers.

Fire officials are reminding residents that the Cannon, Martis, Waterfall and Andrew fires were all caused by people.
