Students received applause, high fives and cake for their academic efforts, good citizenship, participation in American Heart Association activities and for being National PE award winners at the Indian Student Awards at Meneley Elementary School on May 31.
"We are celebrating the success of the students," said Cheryl Villanueva, instructing aide for the Washoe Tribe. "We have seen the growth of so many. It's awesome to be part of it."
Certificates of academic excellence and passes to the Carson Valley Swim Center went to students who received a 3.0 or better grade point average or who had excellent attendance.
Fourth-grader Melanie Crutcher had her hands full with a certificate of achievement, a swim pass and a plaque.
"Getting a plaque for being student of the month was the biggest surprise," she said.
"She did really well this year," said Melanie's mother, Karen McDonald. "I'm proud of her."
Melanie said she likes school but was looking forward to summer vacation.
"I like riding horses in Battle Mountain," said Melanie. "My dad has seven but one is mine - Holly, a black and white paint."
