The 2007 Greater Nevada Credit Union Community Choice Youth Awards Banquet celebrated the excellence of 44 Douglas County youth at Genoa Lakes Golf Club last week.

Student-athletes were honored for their academic excellence, athletic committment and community service. There were 150 individuals who attended the event.

Highlights from this year's banquet included Carson Valley Middle School student Amy Rice who sang the national anthem and performed another song during the event.

One of the 2007 honorees, Breana Lummus, recited a poem and MEFIYI board of trustee Mike McLaughlin of RAMAC Industries designed a power point presentation of each award winner.

Genoa Lakes hosted the dinner reception.

Carson Valley Middle School student-athletes Mia Townsell and Maddy Gilbert co-hosted the event.

MEFIYI co-founders JoJo and Suzi Townsell expressed that the youth of Douglas County deserve an event that recognizes their talents, abilities, ambitions and service to the community.

This year's event also featured two $500 scholarships for one outstanding senior female and one senior female student-athlete.

Kelly Karmann of Whittell High School and Matthew McLaughlin of Douglas High School were the winners.

Karmann plans to attend Cornell University and McLaughlin has been accepted to UCLA.

This is the third year the Community Choice Youth Awards Banquet has honored Douglas County student-athletes. The banquet and 2007 MEFIYI programs are supported by grants from NFL Charities, The E.L. Cord Foundation, Robert R. Banks Foundation, Robert Z. Hawkins Foundation and Smallwood Foundation. MEFIYI also wanted to thank The Record-Courier, Carson Valley Accounting, Mark and Debbie Williams and David and Susan Semas, Genoa Lakes and the Brewery Arts Center for their support. They also noted Mysta Townsell and Molly Lahlum for volunteering their time and effort for the evening.

JoJo Townsell also said that the foundation's thoughts were with George and Josie Graham, who inspired the creation of the event.
