Elwood B Davis died May 22, 2007, at his home in Sierra Place, Carson City. He was born Oct. 24, 1910, in Roswell, N.M. which was a territory at that time. His parents were Herbert B and Rosella M (Bruner) Davis. Elwood was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Mae (Arnaud) and sister Audra Root.

Elwood served in WW II in the Army Air Corps as an airplane mechanic gunner with the 398th Bombardment Group and was honorably discharged. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with one oak leaf cluster, the Air Medal with three oak leaf cluster, and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. Elwood was "recognized as having been the rallying factor of his crew. His coolness and mechanical skill have been displayed on more than one occasion" as written by Harry J Sleaman, 1st Lt., Air Corps, Airplane Commander in a letter dated Oct. 14, 1944. Elwood was considered a good luck charm by the crew, and if he didn't go, no one would go.

Elwood was an avid hunter and fisherman, a lifetime member of the NRA. He had visited Alpine County many years before he and Mae, his wife, moved to Markleeville in the mid '70s and built their home. He served many years on the Alpine County Fish and Game Commission and was active in community affairs.

The Davises moved to Carson City in the late '80s where Elwood continued to be involved in his love of fishing and hunting. He was a member of the Ormsby Sportsman Association. To his dying day Elwood had a soft spot in his heart for Markleeville and always enjoyed visiting here.
