Three cheers for Coleville graduates

When you have been reading about the graduations at schools in the area closest to the Antelope Valley, it is a bit of culture shock to attend Coleville High School's exercises. When I read that Douglas High School had around 380 graduates, I just thought about the small-town fun they were missing. Saturday's program at our local school was a lot of fun, as it has been every year. With our total of 11 graduating seniors, it is very personal, with the community present and involved with all of them. The graduates, in addition to the valedictory speech, participate with some very funny memories of each other during their high school years, a slide show of each of them as they grew to this point in their lives, and a tribute to their parents. This year, there were 16 scholarships of varying amounts that were awarded to them by various groups. It is nice to see them be rewarded for their hard work. We also learned what they each plan for their future education or career steps. It is something we look forward to each year in this close-knit community.

Walker River Color-

guard

This talented group of elementary school students has been very busy lately, participating in the Mule Days event in Bishop, then the Carson Valley Days Parade, where they were rewarded for their skill and effort by being selected best marching drill team unit. Their next appearance will be in the 4th of July parade in Bridgeport. If you get a chance, try to get there for the event, and especially to watch these kids in action. Congratulations to all of them, as well as their coach, Karla Smith.

How Big Is Big fishing derby

July 1 is the first day of the annual fishing derby, How Big Is Big. Fishermen can take their catch to the Walker General Store for weighing in and their listing in the derby records. The event will run until July 31, so there is plenty of time to make more than one trip to the river to catch the big one.

This and that

The Antelope Valley Relay for Life team is still selling raffle tickets through Marlene at the 3 Flags Trading Post in Walker. The tickets will give you a chance to win the beautiful hand-crafted mirror donated by Mike Elliott, as well as the Shimano fishing equipment. The relay will take place Aug. 4 and 5 at Lampe Park in Gardnerville, with our local area being well represented.

I hope all the dads in the area had a great day. A belated happy Father's Day to you all.
