The membership of the Douglas County Democratic Women would like to congratulate Kaylee Hames of Douglas High School and Sioban Curley of Whittell High School, both winners of $1,000 college scholarships. Kaylee Hames was presented her scholarship by Jan Walls at a May award ceremony at Douglas High School. Sioban Curley was awarded her scholarship by Jill Derby at a ceremony at Harveys Lake Tahoe in June.
The yearly scholarships are awarded to one student from each high school majoring in public service, regardless of their political affiliation.
DCDW raises the scholarship funds by selling 50/50 Raffle Tickets. This year's raffle brought in $3,304, of which raffle winner Ranee Barsanti won $1,652. She graciously donated half of her winnings back to the Douglas County Democratic Women.
The raffle tickets were pink in order to raise breast cancer awareness, and $500 was donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
The Douglas County Democratic Women meets the first Monday of the month in the Donegal Room at the Carson Valley Inn, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The price is $15 in advance, $18 at the door. Please RSVP to Katherine Winans, 267-1239, jkw@gbis.com. If cost is a deterrent, contact Carron Baxter, confidentially, at 790-9522.
