The latest report from the Pony Express is that the rider was still east of Fort Churchill at 5:50 a.m., which does not bode well for the 7:30 a.m. arrival in Carson City. The pony was scheduled to be at Fort Churchill by 2:30 a.m. so that puts the whole show about three hours behind. Estimates for arrival in Genoa were anywhere from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., but it will be quite a bit later unless a lot of time gets made up between here and Fallon.
But there'll be other things to do this morning in Nevada's first permanent settlement. Both the Genoa Court House Museum and the Mormon Station State Historic Park Museums are open. At 11 a.m. Park Ranger Jim Black will offer a presentation on the evolution of firearms. At the rate things are going, his one-hour presentation could be over before the pony arrives.
A bonfire behind Genoa Cemetery at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night set off the fire alarm and attracted the attention of law enforcement. I'll see what we can dig up on it today.
It will be sunny and warm today with a high temperature of 90s degrees. Expect the wind to pick up at about 11 a.m. and really get rolling at about 5 p.m. At 7:15 a.m. it's 57 degrees in Genoa and there is a light mist in the Valley.
