The trial of a Topaz Ranch Estates man accused of trying to kill his girlfriend continues this morning with the playing of investigators taped interview with him. Terence Joseph Howell, 51, is claiming the woman cut herself. Prosecutors are attempting to prove he used a knife. The trial could wrap up Friday.

Douglas County commissioners meet 1:30 p.m. today in Stateline. Among the items on the agenda are pay raises for commissioners and other elected officials after the Legislature approved increases in their salaries. In Nevada, the salary of an elected official is set by the Legislature, this time by Senate Bill 516. The county meets at the Tahoe Transportation Center, 169 Highway 50.

The Young Chautauquans will continue their performances in Genoa at 5 p.m. today. Other things going include a beach party at Minden Village, the opening of the new Democratic Headquarters 5 p.m. in Minden and a nature program at the Douglas County Public Library 2 p.m. at Zephyr Cove Park.

Winds with speeds of up to 40 mph and low humidity has caused the National Weather Service to announce a fire weather watch for Friday and Saturday. On the brighter side the temperatures will drop a little. Today's high is expected to hit 91.
