A ball game at Lampe Park in Gardnerville Monday night proved more exciting than usual for onlookers who spied a bear roaming down by Willow Creek.

After phone calls were made, Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputies kept the bear near the creek and at about 10 p.m., Nevada Division of Wildlife biologist Carl Lackey arrived to capture the bear.

"That's the only reason it was noticed. There were people at the park," said Lackey, Tuesday morning. "DCSO treed it right along the creek there until I could get there."

Lackey planned to "work the bear over" Tuesday afternoon, weighing her and collaring her if he determined it necessary, before letting her go somewhere outside of town.

"She's pretty close to 300 pounds. She's a good-sized female," he said.
