A woman who struck a motorcyclist on Foothill Road and then left the scene of the accident is up for sentencing this morning in Douglas County District Court. Kimberly E. Garcia, 26, faces up to 15 years in Nevada State Prison in connection with the March 18 accident in which 60-year-old Claude Kelly lost a leg. Garcia admitted she left the scene of the accident. She tested positive for marijuana.

The Top Gun of fire management teams is scheduled take control of the 2,500-acre Angora fire this morning. Still weather and higher humidity have allowed firefighters to get a line around 40 percent of the fire. They are working against the clock to have the fire surrounded before the winds pick up again on Wednesday. A list of homes in the area and damage done is available at the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department Web site, http://www.co.el-dorado.ca.us/sheriff/fire_damage.pdf The sheriff's department is reporting 173 homes with major damage, nine with moderate and 17 with minor.

The weather today will be smoky and warm with the high temperature reaching 92 degrees. Winds will be light until about 11 a.m. when they will pick up to 14 mph with gusts of up to 20 mph. A fire weather watch has been issued for Wednesday afternoon when a low pressure system will stall over the coast and send winds shooting into Western Nevada.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is reminding residents that setting off fireworks is strictly forbidden along the Sierra Front. There will be legitimate fireworks shows at Lake Tahoe, Reno and perhaps Virginia City for the Fourth of July. Those with the desire to hold their own show should suppress it. The house you save may be your own.
