Since the birth of our son, Sam, several years ago, I've forgotten how quickly little babies grow. Clothing that fits his baby brother, Max, seems to magically shrink overnight, but I recently learned about a great way to pass these almost-brand-new items on.

The Family Support Council of Douglas County in Gardnerville provides unlimited and invaluable support to our community in two ways: the domestic violence/sexual assault division and through their family resource center.

Danielle Reihl is the Family-to-Family coordinator at the Family Support Council. In addition to overseeing the many classes offered for families and parents, she also works with pregnant women, teens and expectant fathers.

She welcomes donations of new and gently used baby items to give to families who might not otherwise be able to afford them. Anything suitable for little ones aged 0-5 can be donated and will be given directly to a family in need.

Reihl mentioned that larger items such as cribs and strollers are greatly appreciated. Also, infant toiletries and diapers are high on the list of needs.

This is a wonderful opportunity for local service groups to get involved. The ladies of the Red Hat Society recently donated goodie bags filled with baby bath accessories, and have given hand-knit baby blankets and hats in the past.

If you have items you'd like to donate, contact Danielle Reihl at 782-8692. Items appropriate for 0- to 5-year-olds can be dropped off at the Family Support Council, located at 1255 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville. Items for children ages 5 and older may be donated to the Family Support Council Thrift Shop, located at 1224 Pep Circle in Gardnerville. Their number is 783-8869.

Ranchos Volunteer Fire Department barbecue is next weekend

It's that time of year again; the Gardnerville Ranchos Volunteer Firefighters host their annual barbecue next Saturday, July 7.

The event kicks off with dinner starting at 4 p.m. Pork, chicken and various side dishes will be served until 8 p.m. There will also be a no-host beer and wine bar. Live music starts at 5 p.m. and if previous years are any indication, the dancing will follow soon afterward.

The raffle this year features many great prizes; fire hydrants and a barbecue grill donated by Western Nevada Supply among them.

Proceeds from the event benefit Ranchos Fire Rescue and are used to purchase new equipment and specialty tools for our volunteers.

Festivities will take place at Fire Station 7 located at 940 Mitch Drive in the Ranchos. Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for kids 10 and younger. Come on out and show your support for our friendly, local volunteer fire department.
