Angora evacuations lifted

All evacuation orders related to the Angora fire will be lifted at 8 a.m. and residents only will be allowed to return to the area of North Upper Truckee Road from Highway 50 to Sawmill Road, according to the City of South Lake Tahoe re-entry information hotline.

Residents are being asked to enter the neighborhood through Lake Tahoe Boulevard to reduce congestion.

Angora Ridge and Tahoe Mountain roads are still closed. Angora Ridge Road will remain closed so heavy equipment can work on the remains of the fire. The city is asking residents to be careful in the burn area. Closure of these roads will be re-evaluated at 6 p.m. Sunday.

The California Department of Forestry is reporting the cost of fighting the Angora fire in South Lake Tahoe has hit $9.7 million.

Fire crews had a line around 80 percent of the fire as of Friday night and expect to have the 3,100-acre blaze surrounded by 6 p.m. Tuesday.

In all, 254 homes and 75 commercial structures were destroyed in the fire.

The number of firefighters working in South Lake Tahoe dropped to 1,332 by Friday night and more are expected to be sent home today. Highway 89 had been reopened.

Today is the first day since Tuesday that has not had a red flag warning or fire weather watch posted for the afternoon. At 5:49 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a fire weather watch for Sunday afternoon through evening. Forecasters are predicting winds with gusts of up to 35 mph and low humidity.
