The Boys & Girls Club of Carson Valley received a $67,000 donation Friday.
Gardnerville resident and former Nevada Assembly Minority Leader Lynn Hettrick donated the trust fund he recently established from his unused campaign funds. Hettrick served in the Nevada Legislature for 14 years and served as co-speaker.
He made the donation to JoJo Townsell at the first Champions for Kids Appreciation Event luncheon held at the Carson Valley Inn.
Townsell asked Hettrick to be honorary chairman of their fundraising efforts.
On hand at the luncheon were board members from both the Carson City and Carson Valley Boys & Girls clubs, as well as local business people who support the project.
The Carson Valley club signed an agreement with Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada to become an official branch in December 2006.
It is currently negotiating with the Douglas County School District for use of Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School for an after-school and summer program.
The club previously raised $52,000 toward the first year's operating budget, but needs an additional $147,000 to cover the first year.
Organizers hope to open the club's doors as an after-school and summer program at Pau-Wa-Lu in July 2007.
Superintendent of Schools Carol Lark was also at the luncheon to express her support for the program.
