Farmers market coming to Minden

Patrons of the popular outdoor farmers market can add downtown Minden to their weekly schedule in May.

The Minden Town Board gave enthusiastic approval Wednesday for the Esmeralda Avenue Farmers Market.

Tumblewind Antiques owner Roxanne Stangle told the board the market would run 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday nights beginning in May through September.

She said Esmeralda would be closed between Fourth and Fifth streets.

"We want to make it a social event, like Victorian Square in Sparks," Stangle said.

She said the Esmeralda market would not be a "mini-craft fair" nor was it intended to compete with the Lampe Park farmers market on Wednesdays.

"The growers like it when they have other things they can participate in," she said. "There will be a market in Truckee on Monday, here on Tuesday, Lampe Park on Wednesday and Carson City Wednesday night," she said.

Stangle said she had four growers committed and had received a dozen calls of interest once word got out of the Minden plans.

She said she needed a minimum of four growers to be successful, but didn't think she would have trouble finding more.

Stangle said plans were in the works for food sales and other homemade items.

The event would be an opportunity for people who work to shop at the Esmeralda Avenue Farmers Market, Stangle said.

"A lot of people work during the day and they can't get to Lampe Park," she said. "We see this as a complement to the Wednesday market. As a business person, I don't want to hurt any business."

She said the hours were set so area residents would not be disturbed.
