A very special good deed

The nicest part about writing this column is when I can let people know an outstanding bit of information about one of our local residents. This is just such a case. On March 4, Lee and Nancy Sims went to dinner at the Bridgeport Inn with some friends. While they were there, a gentleman sitting at a neighboring table just dropped off his chair onto the floor and stopped breathing. With all the years Lee spent in both police and fire professions, he knew what had to be done. He immediately started CPR, with the man's wife helping with compression. They kept this up until the paramedics arrived and got his heart beating again. The man was airlifted to a hospital in Reno; his wife called Lee on Wednesday and thanked him for everything he did, reporting that the man is now up and around, but will need surgery. These were people who happened to be passing through Bridgeport on a trip from Turlock, Calif.; it was just lucky that there was someone present who knew what to do to save him. We're very proud of you, Lee.

Beta Sigma Phi St. Patrick's Day dinner

Remember Saturday, 5 p.m. at the Walker Community Center for this delicious annual corned beef and cabbage dinner. It's only $10 for adults, $6 for children 9 and younger. Between the dinner, homemade desserts and the raffle prizes, especially the $500 Visa gift card, it should be a great evening.

70th annual Lions speakers contest

Zone finals were held March 7 in Walker to determine Mono County's representative in the district competition. The competitors were Erik Porter from Eastern Sierra Academy and Kaela Atleework from Mammoth High School. Their subject was "Global Warming - Fact or Fiction?" It was a great contest between these two very interesting and able speakers. All of us there learned a lot from both of them about their thoughts on global warming and its effects, with the winner ultimately being Erik. Good luck to him at the next level.

-- To allow ample time to groom the course for the upcoming competition, March 20 will be the last day to make your reservations to play in the Jackie Giorgi Pasture Golf Tournament on April 7. -- I spoke with the Easter Bunny's local assistant, Clint Hershey, to find out about the Lions Club Easter Egg Hunt on April 8. It will begin promptly at 1 p.m. and Walker Community Park, so be sure your kids are signed up in plenty of time to participate. There will be four separate hunts, for different age groups, so all will have their chance to find eggs and win prizes.

-- The winners of the Students of the Month for February at Antelope Elementary School were Kaelana Garcia, Eden Strohmaier, Cassie Seamons, and Joel Gomez. Keep up the good work.

-- Marlene at the Walker Senior Center Gift Shop has asked me to tell you that they would welcome donations from those of you who do homemade arts and crafts. These items will be used to raise funds for the senior center and their projects. You can reach her at (530) 495-2955.

-- The Antelope Valley Friends of the Library will hold their first book sale at the Parent-Teacher Organization pancake breakfast and bazaar on April 28. There will be some really good books for sale at very reasonable cost, so it will be well worth checking out. More will follow on this as it gets closer.

-- Last Thursday we got our periodic reminder of where we live, with the earthquake between Bridgeport and Walker. It was big enough to feel, but small enough to cause no damage, which is the kind we'd prefer.
