Prep roundup: Lady Tigers take 7th at weekend tournament

The Douglas High softball team traveled to Sacramento on Thursday for the 2007 Pre-season Tournament of Champions and went 3-2 on the weekend to open its season.

There were 48 teams split into three divisions of 16. Each division was split into 4 pools of 4 teams.

The Lady Tigers started off pool play on Thursday with an 11 Ð 7 win over Mesa Verde High School of Citrus Heights. Douglas was led by freshmen Katrina Morgan who went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and a triple, and Emily Weaver who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double.

After being staked with a 2 Ð 0 lead against Oakmont High School of Roseville, Douglas' pitching staff had a disastrous second inning, giving up 13 runs. The Tigers ended up losing 14 Ð 3. Lauren Hoppe went 2-for-2, including a triple and an RBI to lead the Tigers.

On Saturday, the Tigers put together a great inning of their own, jumping out to a 9 Ð 0 lead in the first against Florin High School of Sacramento.

They managed to hold on for a 13Ð7 victory.

Weaver had two hits, two runs, two RBIs and a triple. Donna Judd had two hits and three runs. Stephanie Harper had two hits and two RBI. Hoppe and Morgan Barone each had a triple and two RBIs.

Douglas ended pool play with a 2-1 record, which made the Tigers the second seed of their pool. On Saturday, the four second seeds of the division played each other, and the Tigers were matched against Fallon. Harper pitched a good game, but the Tigers normally strong defense was undone by seven errors.

Douglas actually outhit Fallon 5Ð3, but lost the game 5Ð1. Weaver had two hits, and Hoppe, Tisha Luken, and Angella Stephenson each had a hit and an RBI.

The loss to Fallon put the Tigers in the seventh-place game against Monterey Trail High School of Elk Grove. Morgan singled to drive home Weaver in the first, and Weaver singled to score Mackenzie Cauley in the second to give Douglas a 2Ð0 lead.

Monterey Trail came back with two runs in the third to tie the game. That score remained through the regulation seven innings.

The game went to an international tiebreaker in the eighth inning, meaning each team starts with a runner on second with no outs. Monterey Trail was designated the visiting team, and scored one run in the top of the eighth.

Luken's single to right scored Hoppe when she made a great slide to avoid the catcher's tag.

Douglas couldn't score again, so the game went to the ninth tied at three.

In the top of the ninth, Monterey Trail moved their runner to third on a fly ball to right. The next batter hit a fly ball to center which was caught by Hoppe for the second out. The runner at third tagged and Hoppe made a perfect throw to catcher Kayla Moore who applied the tag for an inning-ending double play.

Chloe Trudell ran for Moore to start the 9th, and was sacrificed to third on a bunt by Nicole LaPorte.

Weaver got on with an infield hit, and Barone reached on an infield error to load the bases.

Hoppe then launched a walk-off line drive single to deep left to give the Tigers the 4Ð3 victory and a seventh-place finish in the tournament.

Douglas was led by Weaver who went 4-for-4 with an RBI.

Morgan and Luken each had two hits and an RBI, and Cauley had two hits.

Harper scattered three hits over nine innings while striking out 4.

Weaver hit safely in all 5 games of the tournament, batting .611 with 11 hits, six runs, and five RBIs. Morgan hit .417 with five RBIs, Luken hit .385 with five runs and three RBIs, Hoppe hit .357 with five RBIs, and Harper and Judd each hit .333.

Douglas played Dayton in a non-league game on Tuesday and will travel to Susanville for a tournament this Friday and Saturday. The Tigers will open league at home against Hug on Thursday, March 22.

BOYS' GOLF

Douglas opened its season last week by winning the Whittell Icebreaker at Genoa Lakes.

The Tigers turned in a score of 417 to beat Manogue (second place, 417), South Tahoe (third, 425), Spring Creek (fourth, 430), Whittell (fifth, 495) and Mineral County (sixth, 509).

Freshman Thomas Wicker led the Tigers with a 76, followed by senior Reese Kizer with a 77, Troy Shields with an 85, Trevor Mitchell at 89 and Ray Feldmiller with a 103.

Wicker was the top overall finisher in the tournament and Kizer took third overall.

Over the weekend, the Tigers took third at the Mineral County Icebreaker in Hawthorne.

Truckee won the event with a 387 and Fernley took second with a 397. Douglas took third in the 10-team event with a 418.

Wicker and Shields led the way for the Tigers with a 78 each while Trevor Mitchell shot a 79, Eric Guzman had an 87 and Connor Witt had a 96.

Wicker and Shields tied for eighth overall.

BASEBALL

Douglas dropped to 2-3 on the young season Friday night and Saturday afternoon with a 10-7 loss to Galena and a 12-4 loss to Durango out of Las Vegas.

The Tigers will open their league season Thursday at Western Nevada Community College, where they will take on South Tahoe at 3:30 p.m. They play their home-opener Saturday with a doubleheader again versus South Tahoe at 10 a.m.
