Lady Tigers go 3-2 at Susanville

The Douglas High School softball team battled through another tough weekend, piling up a respectable 3-2 record at the Eighth annual Grizzly Tournament of Champions in Susanville, Calif.

The Lady Tigers started off pool play on Friday with a 6-4 win over Paradise High.

Douglas had a balanced attack at the plate with seven players collecting at least one hit.

Mackenzie Cauley led the charge with two hits including a triple and an RBI. Lauren Hoppe drove in two runs as well.

In the second game, Douglas dropped a back-and-forth battle with Manogue 5-3.

The Tigers fell behind 2-0 after three innings, but in the fourth Hoppe drew walk, Tisha Luken singled, Stephanie Harper singled to score Hoppe and Cauley singled two drive two more runs in to put Douglas up 3-2.

Manogue came back with three runs of its own in the fifth to take the win. Hoppe and Cauley each had two hits in the game.

Friday night, Douglas jumped out to a 3-1 lead against Quincy after one inning and pushed it to 8-1 after two on its way to an 11-3 win.

Hoppe went 3-for-3 with a double, three runs scored and four RBIs. Harper and freshman Emily Weaver each had two hits and Harper and Marina Diaz each drove in two runs.

Douglas' 2-1 record through pool play earned the Tigers a No. 2 seed in its pool.

Saturday, Douglas took on Sierra League foe Wooster in the first game and picked up a big 14-2 victory.

Wooster jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, but Douglas scored five over the next three to ignite the blowout.

Seven players collected hits, led by Luken, who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Weaver with two hits, two runs and two RBIs.

In the quarterfinals, Douglas met up with a familiar opponent in Carson.

After only making three errors in their first four games, the wheels came off of the Tigers' normally solid defense as Douglas committed seven errors.

Carson took advantage, scoring seven unearned runs on its way to a 9-0 lead through the top of the third inning.

Douglas fought back with four runs in the bottom of the third, but Carson scored six more runs in the top of the fourth on its way to a 15-6 victory.

Douglas outhit the Senators 10-8 with Weaver, Hoppe, Harper and Angella Stephenson each collecting two hits. Hoppe had three RBIs and Luken drove in two. Carson went on to win the tournament.

For the weekend, Hoppe and Weaver hit safely in all five games. Hoppe led the way batting .600 with two doubles, seven runs scored and 10 RBIs. Weaver hit .500 with a double, eight runs scored and three RBIs. Other top hitters for Douglas were Cauley (.444), Harper (.417), Stephenson (.400), Luken (.353) and Donna Judd (.333).

Douglas next hosts Hug Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. to open the Sierra League season for both teams.
