Carson Valley Middle School eighth-grader Grant Denny, 14, qualified for this weekend's United State Skiing Association Junior Olympics in Mammoth based on his performance during the Far West ski season.

Denny was one of 26 skiers selected for the Western Region J3 Junior Olympics. He enters the weekend as the No. 16 skier on the list.

The top finishers from regional championships will advance on to compete in the International Children's event at Whistler, Canada.

Denny is a member of the Heavenly Ski Foundation and competed in his first race at the age of 2 at Boreal.

He and his teammates, Danny Souza, Austin Norton of Kingsbury Middle School and Mikey Suglian of South Tahoe Middle School, will compete for the Heavenly Race team at the championships.

All three are vying for top finishes in the slalom, giant slalom and Super G races.

Denny and Norton have been teammates since they were 4 years old on the D-team at Heavenly and Denny won Tahoe League championships at ages 6, 7 and 9.
