Sports Today: Reno blasts Douglas softball team

The Douglas softball team managed to jump out to an early lead on Sierra League frontrunner Reno, currently ranked No. 2 in the region, Wednesday afternoon, but the Huskies came back in a big way to take a 21-3 win over the Tigers in Minden.

Reno built a 2-0 lead in the second inning on three hits but Douglas came back around in the bottom of the frame to take a lead.

Katrina Morgan drew a walk and Stephanie Harper sacrificed Morgan to second.

Marina Diaz drew a walk and Nicole LaPorte singled to center to score Morgan.

Freshman Emily Weaver than doubled down the left field line to score Diaz and LaPorte.

Each team went scoreless in the third but Reno exploded with six runs in the fourth.

The Tigers again held the Huskies scoreless in the fifth, but Reno broke out with 13 runs in the sixth to end the game.

"They were probably the strongest hitting team we'll see this year," Douglas coach Andy Mitchell said. "They were strong all the way around, and for our girls it was a good example of the type of program we'd like to be."

Douglas dropped to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in league play. The teams meet up on Saturday in Reno for a 10 a.m. doubleheader.

Douglas topped Reno 5-1 Wednesday with Morgan Pope pitching a complete game to pick up the win.

She helped her effort in the circle out with two hits, one of them being a double.

Rebecca Trute also had two hits with a double and two RBIs and Tara Paiement had two hits with a double and one RBI.

Morgan Blomstrom contributed two RBIs and Erika Evans, Rachel Davis and

Megan Mitchitarian each collecting a hit. Mitchitarian's hit was a triple.

Reno was mounting a comeback with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth when the Huskies hit a grounder to first baseman Kendra Blum, who threw to Paiement at home.

Paiment stepped on home plate and threw back to first where second baseman Ali Murray was standing on the bag for a 3-2-4 double play.

The Dayton High softball team recorded its second win over a South Shore opponent in as many days, shutting out Whittell 10-0 in six innings on Wednesday in Dayton.

The Dust Devils, who beat South Tahoe 5-4 on Tuesday, limited the Warriors offensively. Joan Browne hit a double and advanced to third but no other Whittell player threatened to score.

The Warriors (9-3) begin Northern 2A play on Saturday with a doubleheader against Lovelock at Lampe Park in Gardnerville.

Whittell met one of the top 3A baseball teams in Dayton on Wednesday, and the Warriors won't be looking for a rematch anytime soon.

Dayton cruised past the Warriors 24-0 in a four-and-a-half inning nonleague game.

"They are an extremely good 3A team. They hit the ball very well, but we can't seem to catch it," said WHS manager Don Amaral.

The Warriors committed 10 errors , leading to 14 unearned runs. Four Dust Devil pitchers combined in the no-hitter, allowing only two baserunners.

Amaral, though, was pleased with the progress of catcher Sam Harris. Whittell (2-7-2) will play a makeup game against Coleville today at 3 p.m. at Lampe Park.
